Samsung Plans Four-Model Galaxy S27 Lineup Including New Pro as Ultra Processor Decision Stays Open

SEOUL — Samsung is preparing a four-model Galaxy S27 series for early 2027 that would add a new Pro variant between the Plus and Ultra, according to industry reports from South Korea, while the processor for the top Ultra model remains undecided.

The Elec reported this month that Samsung has begun mass production of its Exynos 2700 chipset and set production targets more than 10 percent higher than those for the prior Exynos 2600. The increase accounts for the new Galaxy S27 Pro. Samsung Display is also preparing AMOLED panels for the series, with annual shipment targets of 47 million to 48 million units, up from the low 40 million range for the S26 family. The Pro is expected to receive 2 million to 3 million panels this year and 4 million to 5 million next year, aligning with assembly readiness in early 2027.

Current reporting indicates the Galaxy S27, S27+, and S27 Pro sold in South Korea and Europe will use the Exynos 2700, while versions for the United States and China will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. The Galaxy S27 Ultra’s processor is still open. Samsung’s System LSI division, which designs Exynos chips, has pushed for the 2700 to power the Ultra as well. Samsung MX, the mobile division that makes the final decision, is weighing benchmark and thermal performance, Qualcomm chip pricing, and available Exynos production capacity.

The S26 Ultra used a Snapdragon processor worldwide with no Exynos variant. Expanding Exynos use to the Ultra would mark a shift from recent practice. Some reports cite internal testing in which the Exynos 2700 scored higher in multi-core Geekbench 6 results than a Snapdragon counterpart, though those figures have not been independently verified. One later report from Seoul Economic Daily said Samsung informed Qualcomm that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 had not met certain performance requirements, potentially opening the door for an Exynos Ultra. Qualcomm has disputed related overheating claims.

Screen sizes cited in Korean reporting are approximately 6.27 inches for the base Galaxy S27, 6.66 inches for the S27+, 6.47 inches for the S27 Pro, and 6.89 inches for the S27 Ultra. Both the Pro and Ultra are expected to use Samsung Display’s newer M16 OLED material set and carry a Privacy Display feature first introduced on the S26 Ultra. The base and Plus models are not expected to receive the M16 material or the upgraded front camera.

Camera configurations are expected to differ by tier. The S27 and S27+ are reported to retain a 12-megapixel front camera with autofocus, similar to the S26 series, along with a 50-megapixel main rear sensor, 12-megapixel ultrawide, and 10-megapixel telephoto. The S27 Pro and S27 Ultra are expected to move to a 16-megapixel front camera. Their rear systems are reported to include a 200-megapixel main sensor and 50-megapixel ultrawide. The Pro may use a 12-megapixel telephoto with 3x or 3.5x optical zoom, while the Ultra is expected to feature a 50-megapixel telephoto with 5x optical zoom. Some reports indicate Samsung may drop a dedicated lower-magnification telephoto on the Ultra and rely on crops from the high-resolution main sensor for intermediate zoom.

The Pro is positioned as a smaller, S Pen-free alternative to the Ultra, with a redesigned wide camera housing shared with the top model. Model numbers that have appeared in regulatory databases include SM-S952U for the S27, SM-S956U for the S27+, SM-S957B/DS for the S27 Pro, and SM-S958U for the S27 Ultra. These listings confirm the four-model structure but do not contain final specifications.

Samsung has not announced the Galaxy S27 series or confirmed any of the reported details. Industry sources expect an Unpacked event in January or February 2027, with some tipsters pointing to early January. Component finalization for the base and Plus models has been reported, while the Pro and Ultra continue evaluation of RAM, storage, and other options. Mass production of key parts is consistent with a first-quarter launch.

The four-model approach would expand Samsung’s mainline flagship range beyond the three phones it has typically offered in recent years. Additional variants such as an FE or Edge model could follow later in 2027, though fewer details have emerged on those. Pricing has not been announced. Component cost pressures and the addition of a new model have led some analysts to expect higher starting prices than the S26 generation.

Samsung MX holds the final processor decision for the Ultra. The division is balancing the desire to increase in-house Exynos volume against the performance and supply reliability of Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon. Production of the Exynos 2700 has already started, and the three-to-four-month timeline from wafer start to finished chips aligns with an early 2027 device launch. Whether the Ultra joins the regional Exynos split or remains Snapdragon-only in all markets will be determined before final production orders are locked.
