SEOUL — Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 undercuts Apple’s newly announced iPhone Duo on weight, thickness and starting price, according to published specifications for both devices.

The Fold 8 launched in July 2026 at $1,899 for the 256GB model. Apple’s iPhone Duo, announced Sept. 9, starts at $1,999 for the same storage capacity and reaches $3,199 for 2TB. Pre-orders for the Duo opened Oct. 16, with sales beginning Oct. 23 in more than 70 countries. The Fold 8 has been available since early August.

Published dimensions show the Fold 8 weighs 201 grams and measures 9.7mm thick when folded and 4.5mm when open. The iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams and measures 11.3mm folded and 5.2mm open. The 53-gram difference is among the largest gaps in current book-style foldables.

Both devices open to a 7.6-inch inner display. The Fold 8’s cover screen is 5.5 inches; the Duo’s is 5.4 inches. Both support 120Hz refresh rates and peak brightness near 3,000 nits. Samsung uses a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel; Apple uses a Super Retina XDR display with a nano-texture finish intended to reduce crease visibility.

Five factors distinguish the Fold 8 in direct comparison:

The first is weight and thickness. The Fold 8 is 53 grams lighter and 1.6mm thinner when folded. Reviewers and specification sheets note that the difference affects daily carry for users who keep the device closed much of the time.

The second is price. The Fold 8’s $1,899 base model is $100 less than the Duo’s entry configuration. Higher storage tiers widen the gap; Samsung’s top 1TB model is $2,499 while Apple’s 2TB Duo reaches $3,199. Street prices for the Fold 8 have fallen further in some markets.

The third is multitasking software. Samsung’s One UI 9 on Android 17 includes Multi Window, a taskbar and Samsung DeX for desktop-style use on external monitors. Apple’s iOS 27 on the Duo supports Split View and saved app pairs but does not offer an equivalent desktop mode at launch. Samsung has refined these tools across eight Fold generations.

The fourth is charging and battery capacity. The Fold 8 carries a 4,800mAh battery and supports 45W wired charging, which Samsung rates at roughly 63 percent in 30 minutes. The Duo’s dual-cell design is rated for up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen and 44 hours on the outer screen, with 50 percent charge in about 20 minutes using a higher-wattage adapter. The Fold 8 also supports reverse wireless charging.

The fifth is SIM flexibility and update length. The Fold 8 accepts a physical nano-SIM plus eSIM options in many markets. The Duo is eSIM-only worldwide. Samsung guarantees seven major Android updates for the Fold 8; Apple typically provides five years of iOS updates.

Camera systems are similar on paper. Both use dual rear sensors: Samsung’s 50-megapixel main and ultrawide versus Apple’s 48-megapixel Fusion main and ultrawide. Neither base model includes a dedicated optical telephoto; the Duo relies on a 2x crop. The Fold 8 Ultra, a separate higher-priced model, adds a 3x telephoto.

Durability ratings differ. The Duo carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. The Fold 8 is rated IP48, which limits dust protection. Apple uses grade-5 titanium and Ceramic Shield; Samsung uses Armor Aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Neither company has released independent long-term durability data beyond laboratory ratings. Samsung has sold foldables since 2019; Apple’s Duo is its first book-style folding iPhone.

Software continuity is another point of comparison. Both screens on the Duo share the same aspect ratio, which Apple says allows content to scale proportionally when the device opens or closes. The Fold 8’s cover and inner screens use different ratios. Samsung offers App Continuity to resume apps across screens.

Storage options favor Apple at the high end. The Duo reaches 2TB; the Fold 8 tops out at 1TB. Both start with 12GB of RAM on base models, and the Fold 8’s 1TB configuration includes 16GB.

No head-to-head independent testing has been published for battery endurance under identical conditions. Manufacturer claims remain the primary data points. Reviewers have noted that real-world results depend on screen brightness, network use and multitasking load.

Samsung has not commented on the iPhone Duo’s specifications. Apple has not released a direct comparison. Both devices target users seeking a compact outer form that expands for media and productivity.

The Fold 8 remains available in Graphite, Cream, Lavender and an online-exclusive Pistachio color. The Duo launches in Star White and Night Sky. Accessories for the Duo include a Folio case with kickstand; Samsung offers cases and covers through its usual channels.

Market data from Counterpoint and other trackers show foldable smartphones still represent less than 2 percent of global shipments. Price, weight and software maturity remain the main variables buyers cite when choosing between the two platforms.
