Microsoft’s web browser ‘Internet Explorer (IE)’ disappears into history after 27 years.
On the 14th, dpa news reported that Microsoft (MS) will end support for most of the IE 11 browser versions from the 15th of this month.
It has been 27 years since it was first introduced as part of the Windows 95 operating system add-on package in 1995.
After that day, IE installed on the PC is deactivated, and when it is executed, it is automatically switched to another Microsoft web browser ‘Edge’.
However, Microsoft is planning to make Edge’s ‘IE mode’ that supports IE-based websites available until at least 2029.
Microsoft stopped developing new features for Internet Explorer with the release of its new web browser ‘Edge’ in 2016.
Internet Explorer was once the most used web browser in the world, and its share soared to 95% in 2003.
However, with the rise of competing browsers such as Firefox and Chrome, and the advent of the smartphone era, their use gradually decreased.
Microsoft has also been preparing to close IE gradually, such as stopping support for ‘Teams’, a collaboration platform, in November 2020, and disabling some functions of ‘Microsoft 365 (M365)’, a subscription-type office, starting in August of last year.
