While the persistence in this quarantine life may be daunting, you can survive this if you’re to keep yourself engaged. Video games are a good way to keep yourself engaged. To take it up a notch, never-ending video games are the best solution to end your daunting quarantine.
Robotron: 2084
The concept of never-ending games was introduced to the public in the late 1970s through games like Space Invaders. But it wasn’t until the 1980s when game developers actually came up with a cool story to go with it. Robotron: 2084 is a shooting game based upon a fictional world where robots have turned against humans in a cybernetic revolt. This revolt supposedly happens in the year 2084, hence the name “Robotron:2084”. You are required to kill the swarm of robots turning up against you in each wave while finding ways to rescue as many as humans possible. If one starts the game in the year 1982, they can play it till 2084 and after, given that they survive the waves!
Though Robotron: 2084 gave people a crux as to how a never-ending game should look like, you can’t rely on it right now since it is an arcade game. With an era dominated by Smartphones, PC and consoles, it is quintessential to cover only such games to be relevant at this point in time. That being said, below mentioned are the games that you could play till the lockdown is lifted.
The Sims
Platforms: Windows, Mac OS, Playstation 2,3&4, Xbox, Android
The Sims made ripples all across the gaming community as soon as it was released in 2000. It gives its players enough authority to create artificially intelligent people before placing them in different houses. Once done, the gamers are required to keep tabs on their moods and desires. This shouldn’t come as a surprise as the game is partly based on Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. This is a sandbox game which you could play for hours, if not years!
World of Warcraft
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, macOS
World of Warcraft became a cult in the gaming community when it was released in 2004. Since then, the game has a total of more than 100 million registered accounts. This massively multiplayer online role-playing game has a world that spans around 100,000 sq.km which opens up the possibility to do a lot of never-ending stuff. From races to quests to factions, there’s a lot that one could do in this game. This is the reason as to why the game developers have released as many as 7 expansions for this game!
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Activision’s Call of Duty franchise doesn’t need an introduction, as it is one of the best action games available in the market! Modern Warfare, in particular, finds its way into this list for its never-ending multiplayer and prestige mode. Having a powerful internet connection is enough for you to team up with people across the globe for cordially fighting the enemies. This battle royale mode, also called Call of Duty: Warzone can also be downloaded independently. While killing time, you can also befriend some strangers and learn a thing or two about teamwork!
No Man’s Sky
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One
No Man’s Sky is a culmination of 3 years of hard work from a small team of Hello Games. The game has 18 quintillion procedurally-generated planets, meaning there’s a lot that one could do. The gist of the story is guiding a lost amnesiac traveller from a remote planet. Unfortunately, the game wasn’t well-received, since people thought of it to be repetitive. Moreover, the game had a limited number of game modes until Hello Games upgraded it. Nevertheless, No Man’s Sky is still a good game if you’re into ET and exploration.
Pac-Man 256
Platforms: iOS, Android, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Pac-Man 256 has an interesting origin behind its name. In the original Pac-Man arcade game, once you reach level 256, a bug in the game glitches out half of the screen, making it impossible to continue. Determined to fix this bug, the game developers would go on to build a new game that would keep the yellow dot muncher run beyond level 256! Needless to say, this game is still relevant these days. With gamers actively beating the highest scores, currently, the highest score stands at 2,302,539, as per Steam.
Wrestling Revolution
Platforms: Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows, Ouya and macOS
Though this game might not have reached a wider audience, it surely does deserve all the credit for its gameplay. Wrestling Revolution is an RPG that allows you to create your own wrestler and enter into the professional career. However, if wrestling isn’t your thing, the game also has a booking career which gives you authority to make matches. Both Wrestling and Booking careers are never-ending unless you fail to complete the occasional quests given to you by top officials, which will force you to retire.
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey
Platform: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch (Japan only), Stadia
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is Ubisoft’s 11th instalment of the popular Assassin’s Creed franchise. Succeeding the 2017’s Origins, Odyssey is based upon a mythological history of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta. While you guide your mercenary to fight the battle on an attempt to reunite the families, you will also have authority over creating new quests on your own. This allows you to spend more time despite finishing the official content. Mind you, these quests can go forever as long as you are creating it on a timely basis!
Euro Truck Simulator 2
Platforms: Linux, Microsoft Windows, macOS
A sequel to 2008 Euro Truck Simulator, this game adheres to the same concept of picking up cargo from various locations and delivering it. These locations however sprawl across the entire Europe. Depending on your performance and the money you make, you can start a depot of your own to have drivers work under you. The possibilities are limitless, you drive across 71 cities in twelve different countries, over twenty different types of cargo and over fifteen fictional European companies. In addition to that, you also have 6 map DLCs to further expand the game.
Minecraft
Platforms: Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, iOS, Xbox One & 360, PlayStation Vita,3&4, Fire OS, Nintendo Switch
This list would be incomplete without Mojang’s sandbox video game, Minecraft. Minecraft is a procedurally-generated 3D world wherein players can modify the game by creating new gameplay mechanics and assets. There are unlimited resources for players to utilise, for building a world catering to their needs. This concept was well-received among the gamers, making it the best selling video game of all time with a sales of over 180 million copies & 112 million monthly active users.
