Apple’s ‘battery gate’ burden continues… Addition of UK lawsuit

According to The Guardian on the 6th (local time), British consumer rights activist Justin Gutmann has filed a lawsuit over Apple’s ‘Battery Gate’ in 2017.

If Gutmann wins the trial, the 25 million consumers who bought the phone in the UK could seek damages of more than £750 million.

The products related to this lawsuit are ▲ iPhone 6 ▲ iPhone 6 Plus ▲ iPhone 6s ▲ iPhone 6s Plus ▲ iPhone 7 ▲ iPhone 7 Plus ▲ iPhone 8 ▲ iPhone 8 Plus ▲ iPhone X ▲ iPhone SE.

Apple Battery Gate started in 2017 when ▲ iPhone 6 ▲ iPhone 7 ▲ iPhone SE users complained that the battery performance was poor after updating the iOS 11.2 software.

At the time, Apple admitted that it had intentionally lowered the performance of older iPhone batteries through a software update. However, it was explained that the update was carried out to avoid the phenomenon that the lithium-ion battery installed in the iPhone is low or the power is suddenly turned off due to an external environment. By saying this, Apple partially subsidized the cost of replacing the battery.

However, consumers in the United States and other countries have filed a class action lawsuit against Apple. In 2020, Apple agreed to pay up to $500 million in a US class action lawsuit. At the end of that year, a total of $113 million (about 145.7 billion won) was paid as a settlement to consumers in 34 U.S. states.

“We are starting this case so that millions of iPhone users across the UK can be compensated for the damage caused by Apple’s actions,” Gutman told The Guardian. And I would like you to refrain from doing this.”
