Habits that ruin your eye health

The eye refers to a sensory organ that has the function of importing visual information, converting it into electrical and chemical information, and transmitting it to the brain. In addition, the eyelids play a role in protecting the eyes and at the same time helping the production and discharge of tears and keeping the cornea smooth and uniform by covering the eye surface with appropriate tears. The eyes, which play such an important role, are adversely affected by various factors in life. In particular, it can be said that the increased use of smartphones and smart devices in recent years has become a factor that further threatens eye health. When the symptoms of dry and stiff eyes continue, it may recover if you take a break for a certain period of time. It is important to improve the factors that adversely affect eye health because the eyes have a characteristic that once the visual acuity is lost, it is difficult to restore it to its original state. So today, let’s take a look at some of the habits that ruin your eye health. Habits that ruin your eye health

1. Habit of rubbing your eyes frequently

The first habit that can ruin your eye health is habitual and frequent rubbing of your eyes. The habit of rubbing your eyes involuntarily when you fall asleep or when you are tired does not cause any problems right away, but if you keep it for a long time, it can cause damage to the cornea or act as a factor to change the shape of the cornea. In addition, it is recommended to be careful because the tissue reduces the elasticity of the delicate eyelids and can cause sagging of the eyelids and the formation of wrinkles.

2. Habit of looking at smartphones and monitors for a long time

The habit of looking at smartphones, monitors, and various smart devices for a long period of time also maximizes fatigue and can damage eye health. In particular, this habit causes dryness by reducing the number of normal blinking of the eyes. According to a study conducted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a study has been published that, on average, the number of blinks is reduced by 30-50% when looking at a monitor intensively. In addition, the habit of looking at the lights emitted from various devices in a dark room or using a smartphone while lying down increases the intraocular pressure even more. Therefore, after using it for a certain period of time, it is necessary to take adequate rest to prevent dryness of the eyes and reduce fatigue. Also, looking at distant scenery or objects is said to help relieve eye strain.

3. Habit not to wear sunglasses

Not wearing sunglasses in everyday life is not a big problem. However, if you do not wear sunglasses when you spend a lot of time outdoors where there is a lot of sun exposure, it can cause damage to the cornea and conjunctiva. In particular, prolonged exposure to strong UV rays increases the risk of developing diseases such as cataracts due to corneal damage. Therefore, it is recommended to make it a habit to wear sunglasses when you are going to be outdoors for a long time during a time when the sunlight is strong.

4. Less momentum

Insufficient activity and low exercise can cause various metabolic and chronic diseases, and adversely affect eye health. A regular exercise habit helps control blood pressure and cholesterol levels, so it helps the optic nerve work smoothly and can have a good effect on preventing vision deterioration. In particular, diseases such as diabetes have a high risk of leading to complications such as diabetic retinopathy and cataracts, so it is necessary to have a regular exercise habit without overdoing it. However, if you have been diagnosed with a risk of macular degeneration and glaucoma, you should refrain from excessive exercise that increases intraocular pressure.

5. Habit of excessive salt intake

Consuming a lot of foods with excessive salt and various chemical seasonings can also make your eyes dry more and increase fatigue, so it is recommended to control your intake. On the other hand, it is good to consume a variety of nutrients such as lutein, zeaxanthin, anthocyanin, and omega 3 fatty acids, which are excellent in helping to improve eye function. Green vegetables such as kale, spinach, asparagus, and broccoli, as well as blueberries, bilberries, aronia, cucumber, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, sweet pumpkin, eggs, and salmon are among the foods that help improve eye health, so it is recommended to consume them regularly. .

Other habits to watch out for

In addition to the aforementioned habits, prolonged use of contact lenses can also cause problems in oxygen permeability and adversely affect eye health, so long-term use should be avoided. In addition, eye drops and artificial tears are effective in improving dryness of the eyes and relieving symptoms of redness, but if used excessively, they can make the eyes more dry and dilate blood vessels, so be careful. In addition, smoking can block the supply of oxygen to the fibrous tissue and cause platelet aggregation, which can impede the flow of blood to the eyes, so it is recommended to quit smoking.
